In my previous two posts, I shared paintings inspired by movie scenes and some real-life scenarios. But one day, it suddenly hit me\u2014sketching is the foundation of everything. I honestly felt a bit silly for overlooking that before. So I decided to embark on a 10-day journey into portrait sketching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This process unfolded in several stages. It started when I stumbled upon a book at a bookstore: \u4eba\u4f53\u7ed3\u6784\u539f\u7406\u4e0e\u7ed8\u753b\u6559\u5b66 (Human Anatomy for Artists)<\/em> by \u8096\u73ae\u6625<\/a>. That discovery completely blew my mind\u2014it felt like an overdose of knowledge. The book was packed with structural analyses of limbs, movement, head shapes, and facial expressions. It almost read like a medical textbook. But it also made me realize something crucial: structure is the core of everything in drawing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From there, I dove deeper and picked up a few more books, including \u4eba\u4f53\u7ed3\u6784\u4e0e\u52a8\u6001\u7ed8\u5236\u9ad8\u6548\u7ec3\u4e60\u6cd5<\/em>\uff1a\u8499\u5c0f\u6d1b\u7f16\u8457<\/a>, \u7d20\u63cf\u4e4b\u9053\uff1a<\/a><\/em>\u9ad8\u5b97\u82f1\u8457<\/a>, The Eye of the Painter<\/em> by Andrew Loomis<\/a>. I also came across some podcasts and videos i found very interesting, including the draftsman podcast<\/em> by Stan Prokopenko and Marshall Vandruff<\/a>, a video series \u5c40\u90e8<\/em>: \u9648\u4e39\u9752<\/a>, these gave me inspiration and creative energy before i painted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are a few key takeaways from the materials I explored: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

From \u7d20\u63cf\u4e4b\u9053<\/em>: The content is genuinely helpful, though I found the author\u2019s tone a bit overly didactic. (I\u2019m not here to judge, but some parts felt a bit like propaganda.)<\/s> Still, the book is filled with valuable advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From \u5c40\u90e8<\/em> : One of the most moving moments was the unfinished painting of Vincent van Gogh. Later, while reading Van Gogh\u2019s letters, I was struck by the raw sincerity in his words and his art. That kind of authenticity is something I deeply crave in life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Draftsman<\/em> podcast: One powerful insight was that real practice isn\u2019t just copying photos. We should observe carefully, then try to imagine and draw from memory or create variations\u2014same character, same expression, different angles. That shook me\u2014it completely changed how I think about practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From The Eye of the Painter<\/em>: \u201cNature has no contours.\u201d<\/em> Accidental or random elements can make a painting more dynamic. Painters can dramatize, simplify, beautify, or reinterpret what they see, based on their personal vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My Sketching Journey:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Stage 1: I got overwhelmed by all the books\u2014where should I begin? Should I dive into anatomy studies right away? At first, I just wanted to sketch some portraits from albums I love, starting with Joey Yung\u2019s concert N6 album<\/em>. I wasn\u2019t paying much attention to light-shadow harmony, and facial perspective was definitely something I needed to work on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stage 2: I realized I didn\u2019t actually know how to observe<\/em>. My eyes weren\u2019t \u201chonest,\u201d and I often got proportions, lines, and angles wrong. It reminded me to focus more on seeing before drawing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stage 3: After a few album sketches, I moved on to drawing characters. I realized that painting is deeply personal\u2014I prefer sketching people I empathize with or can understand emotionally through their expressions. I finished two sketches of \u201cBroken Ken.\u201d Figure 6 was a turning point\u2014from then on, I paid more attention to anatomy and muscle structure. I liked this one especially because part of it came from my imagination. It held meaning for me, beyond just technical practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stage 4: I sketched more characters from Succession<\/em>. Figure 8 was a complete failure\u2014I lost patience with the hair and skipped the details. The lighting was a mess too. Honestly, it turned out so bad I didn\u2019t even feel like revising it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stage 5: In the last two days, I focused more on emotional expression. Figure 9 is my favorite scene from Succession<\/em>, Season 1 Episode 1\u2014on the helicopter, where the eye contact speaks volumes. The final sketch was a real challenge\u2014trying to capture what I consider the most moving eyes in cinema. The result wasn\u2019t perfect, but it wasn\u2019t terrible either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe next time, I\u2019ll go back to the basics. I\u2019ve realized I was too eager to \u201cfinish\u201d something, but building a strong foundation is what truly matters. Be patient, spend enough time to polish each step, and stay comfortable in solitude. That\u2019s where real growth begins.<\/p>\n\n\n
